Dogs At Large

Summer is a wonderful time to bring your dog for a walk at one of our beautiful parks; however, please keep in mind that we do have a leash law.  The Village of North Syracuse has a local law which requires all dogs to be on a leash, and under the control of its owner, while in a public place.  Don’t forget those waist bags! The law also requires dog owners to pick up dog waist… Enjoy the summer!!!

Crosswalks – The Rule

Did you know that, under certain circumstances, vehicles must yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk!

The law states that when traffic-control signals are not in place or not in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way, slowing down or stop for a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk.   However, no pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impractical for the driver to yield!

A good rule of thumb is, while driving and approaching any crosswalk, if the crosswalk is occupied, meaning a pedestrian is actively crossing with-in the crosswalk, you should yield to that pedestrian.

The Village of North Syracuse has several crosswalks, which are not controlled by signals, so motorist should yield to pedestrians who are crossing the road with-in those designated crosswalks.

Have a safe winter!

Phone Scams

Recently, there has been a number of phone scams reported to the Village of North Syracuse Police Department.  One was an individual who called a local business claiming to be from National Grid Collection and demanded immediate payment or their power would be shut off.  National Grid recently put out a news release warning customers of this particular scam and indicated that the company does call people about delinquent payments but never demands payment.  The second scam involved a similar situation purportedly from a well known company demanding payment.  In both situations, the scammer requested payment via pre-paid card or a wire transfer. Remember, scammers can be very convincing; they may even have personal information such as exact balance figures, due dates and account numbers.  Residents should always be leery of these situations and should always attempt to verify all information before providing payments.  If you believe you have been the victim of a phone scam, or other form of fraud, please do not hesitate to contact the Village of North Syracuse Police Department.  Click on the below link to learn of additional tips to protect you from other forms of fraud.

NY Alert

The Village of North Syracuse is currently updating our Emergency Operations Plan.  An integral part of any emergency plan is to effectively communicate to those individuals who may be affected. Examples include: road closures, evacuation zones or where to report for additional information.  In the event of a large scale, county wide emergency, traditional communication methods may be significantly compromised.  For this reason, Village of North Syracuse residents are encouraged to sign up for NY Alert, a Free State wide, all-hazards alert and notification web-based portal.

By signing up for NY-Alert, you can receive warnings and emergency information via the web, your cell phone, email and other technologies.  Your information is protected and never shared with anyone else.  You can modify what type of information you receive or unsubscribe at any time.  It is a tool to provide you with critical information when you may need it most.

To sign up you can go to http://www.nyalert.gov  or click on the link posted on the Village of North Syracuse web-site.

Police AED Program

Did you know that Village of North Syracuse Police Officers are not only trained in first aid and CPR, but also have access to Automated External Defibrillators or AED’s?  In fact, just last week North Syracuse Police Officers used AED’s twice during life saving efforts.  Several years ago, the department purchased one AED and one AED was donated by the North Syracuse Police Benevolent Association.  Although the initial cost and associated maintenance for these devices can be expensive, their life saving potential is priceless and it’s just another example of the service provided by the Village of North Syracuse Police Department.

If you would like to donate toward the Police AED Program, please write or stop by Police Headquarters.  (No cash please, checks or money orders are welcome)

Shopping Safety Tips

The holiday shopping season is upon us and the North Syracuse Village Police Department would like to offer some shopping safety tips:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid parking in isolated areas.
  • Walk in lighted areas and on established paths.
  • Have your keys ready versus digging through a purse or bag as you walk through a parking lot.
  • Look for and park near security cameras.
  • Keep bags in your trunk and not in open view.
  • Be alert in crowded places like parking lots, jammed aisles and elevators.
  • Safety in numbers; if possible, shop with family or friends.
  • If someone makes you uncomfortable, or the situation doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and leave.
  • Carry a purse close to the body and hold it tight.
  • If you have a number of packages from one store, put them in your trunk before you arrive at the next store, restaurant, etc.
  • At home or while shopping, never leave any personal items in your vehicle or in plain sight. This includes money (even loose change), credit cards, cell phones, purses and GPS units.
  • Never leave any door unlocked or windows open.
  • Always allow yourself extra time; while in a rush, people forget basic safety rules.
  • If you see anything suspicious, call 911.

Have a safe and happy holiday!
