Halloween Safety Reminder

Halloween Safety Reminder

Each year hundreds of children take part in Halloween activities in the Village of North Syracuse. There are many safe measures that parents can take to make sure a child is protected. By taking some simple precautions, families can make Halloween fun and safe.

If a child plans to go trick-or-treating this Halloween, it is important to remember the following safety tips.

Treats:

Advise children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering.

Costumes:

When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean these items won't catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source.

Visibility:

For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim bags with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores. To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights.

Safety:

Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling. If a mask is worn, make sure it has eyeholes large enough to allow full vision. Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft and flexible material.

An adult or an older, responsible child should always accompany young children. Children should be cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers.

Safe Houses:

Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome. Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult.

By following some simple steps, we can keep this a safe, fun and family friendly Holiday.

The North Syracuse Police Department wishes everyone a safe and fun-filled Halloween. If Village of North Syracuse residents wish to have a North Syracuse Police Officer respond to your residence for a free candy safety scan, please call (315) 458-5670 and a police officer will respond.

The North Syracuse Police will also be deploying additional marked and unmarked police patrols during the evening patrolling residential streets and neighborhoods.

Heritage Park Upgrade - Thank You Team Depot!

Many thanks go out to Steve Beardsley (Team Depot Captain) and fellow, staff members of Home Depot for volunteering their time to upgrade the Heritage Park restrooms & building. New sinks, urinal, mirrors, wall coverings, and paint have really spruced up this building. These enhancements were much needed and greatly appreciated  – especially by the children and parks staff that utilize that space throughout the summer for the day camp program. Steve Beardsley assisted Parks Director, Teresa Roth with obtaining a grant from Home Depot so that all of the supplies were donated and volunteer helpers were provided for the installation. As part of the same grant, work (new light fixtures & ceiling tiles) was done earlier in the summer at the Lonergan Park storage building.
